Dust and gas in luminous infrared galaxies - results from SCUBA observations

چکیده
We present new data taken at 850 μm with SCUBA at the JCMT for a sample of 19 luminous infrared galaxies. Fourteen galaxies were detected. We have used these data, together with fluxes at 25, 60 and 100 μm from IRAS, to model the dust emission. We find that the emission from most galaxies can be described by an optically thin, single temperature dust model with an exponent of the dust extinction coefficient (kλ ∝ λ ) of β ≃ 1.4 − 2. A lower β ≃ 1 is required to model the dust emission from two of the galaxies, Arp 220 and NGC 4418. We discuss various possibilities for this difference and conclude that the most likely is a high dust opacity. In addition, we compare the molecular gas mass derived from the dust emission, M850μm, with the molecular gas mass derived from the CO emission, MCO, and find that MCO is on average a factor 2–3 higher than M850μm.

Continuum Observations of the High-Redshift Universe at Sub-millimetre Wavelengths
New bolometer arrays operating on the world’s largest submillimetre and millimetre telescopes offer a unique view of the highredshift universe with unprecedented sensitivity. Recent sub-millimetre continuum studies show that the host galaxies of many luminous highredshift active galactic nuclei (radio galaxies and radio-quiet quasars) radiate strongly at rest-frame far-infrared wavelengths and ...
متن کاملDeep Submillimeter Surveys: Luminous Infrared Galaxies at High Redshift
Deep surveys at 850μm from Mauna Kea using the SCUBA camera on the JCMT appear to have discovered a substantial population of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs: Lir > 10 L⊙) 3 at high redshift (z ∼ 1−4). The cumulative space density of these sources (∼ 10 deg with S850 > 1mJy) is sufficient to account for nearly all of the extragalactic background light at submillimeter wavelengths. Curren...
متن کاملComparison of dust-to-gas ratios in luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies
The dust-to-gas ratios in three different samples of luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies are calculated by modelling their radio to soft X-ray spectral energy distributions (SED) using composite models which account for the photoionizing radiation from HII regions, starbursts, or AGNs, and for shocks. The models are limited to a set which broadly reproduces the mid-IR f...
متن کاملDust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies
This review discusses the current status of our knowledge of emission by dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies, and the uncertainties in the derivation of physical parameters from these data. The similarity of far-infrared luminous, gas-rich high redshift radio galaxies and local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) is discussed. Given that local ULIGs rapidly convert most o...
متن کاملThe Rest-frame Optical Properties of Scuba Galaxies
We present optical and near-infrared photometry for a sample of 96 dusty, far-infrared luminous galaxies. We have precise spectroscopic redshifts for all these galaxies yielding a median redshift of < z>= 2.2. The majority, 78, are submillimeter-detected galaxies lying at z = 0.2–3.6, while the remaining 18 are optically-faint μJy radio galaxies at z = 0.9–3.4 which are proposed to be similarly...
